Tensions are rising within the Parti des Peuples Africains – Côte d’Ivoire (PPA-CI) as the party prepares for its first ordinary congress on May 14-15, 2026, in Abidjan. In an official statement released on May 13, the party’s leadership, led by President Laurent Gbagbo, announced disciplinary measures against 61 officials and members deemed “undisciplined.”

The sanctions, outlined in a communiqué signed by Secretary-General Tchéidé Jean Gervais, were approved by the Strategic and Political Council (CSP) under decision CSP n°02-2026/CSP/PPA-CI/KKJ/07052026 and validated by the party presidency on May 13. The measures aim to reinforce internal discipline and ensure smooth preparations for the upcoming congress.

Three-tiered disciplinary action

The sanctions are divided into three categories:

  • Group 1: 44 officials suspended for 18 months. These individuals are barred from all party activities and internal elections during the suspension period.
  • Group 2: 10 officials suspended for 12 months, facing similar restrictions.
  • Group 3: 7 officials suspended for 6 months, also excluded from party engagements and elections.

These sweeping measures come at a critical juncture for the PPA-CI, as the party faces internal divisions and strategic disagreements. While the leadership frames the decision as a bid to strengthen cohesion, critics argue it signals deeper internal strife. No public reactions from the sanctioned officials have been reported yet, but the scale of suspensions is expected to spark intense debates within the party.

What’s at stake for the PPA-CI?

The congress, already a pivotal moment for the party’s future, could see its internal dynamics reshaped by these sanctions. Analysts suggest the move may be an attempt to consolidate control under the official party line, particularly as leadership transitions loom. The outcome of the congress will likely hinge on how these disciplinary actions are perceived by rank-and-file members and whether they exacerbate existing fractures.

As the party gathers in Abidjan, the question remains: Will these sanctions unite the PPA-CI or further divide it?
