Peru backs Morocco’s autonomy plan and territorial integrity in Sahara dispute

The incoming Peruvian government has pledged to support Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces, according to a statement from the office of President-elect Keiko Fujimori.

This stance was conveyed during a meeting between the President-elect and Morocco’s Ambassador to Peru, Amin Chaoudri, who presented a congratulatory message from His Majesty King Mohammed VI following her election victory.

During the discussion, the incoming Peruvian administration reaffirmed its commitment to backing Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces, the statement noted. Keiko Fujimori also reiterated full support for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which endorses the autonomy plan as the framework for a lasting solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara.

In the congratulatory message, King Mohammed VI expressed warm wishes to Ms. Fujimori for the trust placed in her by the Peruvian people to advance progress and prosperity. Emphasizing the strong bonds between Morocco and Peru, rooted in deep friendship, mutual respect, and shared values, His Majesty underscored his determination to work alongside the new Peruvian president to elevate bilateral relations to a multidimensional partnership, to the benefit of both nations.
