The Paris Saint-Germain have not abandoned their interest in Julian Alvarez, a pursuit that first emerged two years ago before he left Manchester City to join Atletico Madrid. However, after the Colchoneros, it could be the Blaugrana who thwart PSG’s plans this time around. That would be just fine with Pedri, the FC Barcelona midfielder.

The Julian Alvarez saga has been heating up the early summer transfer window, which officially opened on June 15 and closes on September 1. The 26-year-old Argentine international is currently playing his second World Cup with Argentina on the American continent. Although he is under contract with Atletico Madrid until 2030, the Colchoneros striker has no plans to return to the Spanish capital once the 2026 World Cup concludes.

“I think a transfer is best for everyone”

On Monday, Argentina secured their spot in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup by beating Austria 2-0. In the mixed zone, Julian Alvarez publicly expressed his desire to leave, hinting that he wants to join FC Barcelona. “This is not the time to talk about it, but I can’t hide either. I try to be an honest person. I have spoken with the people at Atletico Madrid, and I think a transfer is best for everyone. I want to fulfil my dream.”

“I hope this transfer can happen, and if so, all the better”

This is bad news for PSG, who have kept a close eye on the Rojiblanco striker’s situation since the summer of 2024, before his move to Atletico Madrid. Moreover, FC Barcelona is already rolling out the red carpet for Julian Alvarez. Just look at the comments made by Pedri during his interview. “A transfer of Julian Alvarez to FC Barcelona? I think many things need to happen for that. I don’t want to meddle in club affairs or a player’s affairs. It’s true that I adore Julian as a player, and I’ve always said I want the best players at Barça. I hope this transfer can materialise, and if it does, then all the better.” The FC Barcelona midfielder has fired the first shot. Now it remains to be seen whether Paris Saint-Germain will respond publicly or behind the scenes to tip the scales in their favour in the race to sign Alvarez.
