Constitutional Council: after initial calm, Ousmane Sonko dramatically alters his discourse

Conseil constitutionnel : Après l’apaisement, Ousmane Sonko change complètement de discours

Ousmane Sonko has recently displayed a notable inconsistency in his statements regarding the Constitutional Council, transitioning from an appeal for adherence to its rulings to sharp criticism. During the inauguration of Pastef’s headquarters in Touba, he openly condemned the President’s perceived influence over laws passed by deputies, labeling the situation as « grave ».

Ousmane Sonko has made a clear decision to alter his stance concerning the Constitutional Council. His position appears to have evolved significantly within a matter of days. Following the Council of Sages’ decision to invalidate the text adopted by the National Assembly – a measure intended to bolster parliamentary powers at the expense of those held by the President of the Republic – the leader of Pastef had initially urged respect for this very ruling.

« This decision is binding on all! (…) In a democracy, when institutions fulfill their roles, each within its designated sphere of action, no crisis can emerge, » Ousmane Sonko had previously asserted. However, speaking at the inauguration of the Pastef headquarters in Touba, the political figure delivered a markedly different address. Before his supporters, he vehemently criticized the judgment issued by the seven members of the Constitutional Council.

« The Constitutional Council cannot dictate that deputies must pass laws designed to please the President of the Republic. What is unfolding in this nation is deeply serious, » he declared. Ousmane Sonko also questioned the Head of State’s frequent appeals to the Constitutional Council. « Every single week, he goes to the Constitutional Council, » he stated pointedly, referring to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
