Ousmane Sonko’s Mbacké tour: unveiling Pastef’s financial independence and political vision
During a two-day visit to the Diourbel region as part of the « 48 heures de Pastef » event, Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef movement, reaffirmed his party’s commitment to financial autonomy. Speaking to crowds in Touba and Sadio, he underscored the grassroots origins of his political project and outlined his expectations for the current government’s leadership.
Financial self-reliance: a core pillar of Pastef
In Touba, Sonko addressed supporters to clarify his party’s funding model, which relies entirely on membership contributions rather than public funds. Responding to speculation about the surge in membership card sales, he emphasized transparency and independence from state coffers.
« Pastef does not rely on state resources to fund its activities—this would be contrary to our principles, » he stated, drawing a sharp contrast with traditional political financing. With a touch of humor, he added, « By 4 PM today, all 13,000 membership cards distributed had already been sold. We had to place an emergency order in Dakar to meet demand. »
He urged supporters to stay focused on the party’s mission, warning against distractions from political opponents. « Avoid unnecessary confrontations. Responding to provocation only weakens our cause. If peace prevails in Senegal, Pastef will dominate the political landscape—no election will slip through our grasp, » he declared.
Revisiting Senegal’s political shift
In Sadio, Sonko took a more analytical tone, reflecting on the historic political transition of March 2024. He highlighted his pivotal role in advocating for Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s candidacy after his own electoral disqualification, framing it as a testament to the movement’s legitimacy and strategic foresight.
His speech also hinted at growing public skepticism about the government’s adherence to its original commitments. Sonko drew a subtle but deliberate line between Pastef’s foundational vision and the current administration’s actions, suggesting a divergence from the promises that brought it to power.
2026 and 2029: critical milestones ahead
Sonko positioned himself as the guardian of Pastef’s founding ideals, asserting that 80% of the political struggle had already been achieved under his leadership. He framed the upcoming 2026 and 2029 elections as decisive moments to solidify the movement’s long-term vision.
« The fight isn’t over—far from it. These elections will determine whether we stay true to our roots or surrender to the status quo, » he told militants, reinforcing his central role in shaping Senegal’s political future.
