Senegal’s economic future hinges on youth employment, says prime minister

In a decisive address to legislators, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko reaffirmed that job creation remains at the heart of Senegal’s economic and social agenda. Speaking during Friday’s parliamentary session focused on current affairs, he emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the nation’s pressing youth employment crisis through targeted economic reforms.

« Job creation isn’t just a priority—it’s our absolute focus, » declared Ousmane Sonko before the National Assembly. He outlined a bold strategy to generate thousands of new employment opportunities, positioning this initiative as central to Senegal’s broader economic reorientation. The plan places strong emphasis on nurturing domestic private enterprises and strengthening the country’s economic sovereignty.

While acknowledging the magnitude of the challenge, the Prime Minister struck a balanced tone between ambition and pragmatism. « We cannot promise every citizen a job, but we will create thousands of positions for young people, » he stated. He underscored that this ambitious goal requires collaboration between government agencies, private sector actors, and economic partners.

Ousmane Sonko went further to advocate for a more nationalistic economic model, one that prioritizes Senegalese participation in productive sectors. « We are realigning our economic strategy to ensure greater Senegalese involvement without excluding international investors, » he explained. « Our goal is clear: to secure substantial roles for our citizens in the economy while maintaining beneficial foreign partnerships. »

A cornerstone of this strategy will be a forthcoming economic patriotism bill, designed to anchor industrial and commercial activities within Senegal. The proposed legislation aims to bolster the nation’s economic independence and foster sustainable growth.

The Prime Minister concluded by stressing the critical role of a well-structured domestic private sector. « A strong private sector requires strong government support to flourish, » he asserted. He called for collective action to meet the aspirations of Senegal’s youth and build a more resilient economy for future generations.
