Approximately ten Nigerien soldiers lost their lives on Friday during a brutal attack by the jihadist group Boko Haram. The assault targeted a military outpost located near N’Guigmi, in the southeastern region of Niger. Casualties were also reported among the attackers.
N’Guigmi, a vital garrison town, is situated within the Diffa region, which borders Lake Chad. This expansive body of water and its surrounding marshlands, shared by Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger, and Chad, have unfortunately become a stronghold for various jihadist factions, including both Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) since 2009.
An anonymous local resident, speaking from N’Guigmi for security reasons, stated that “around ten soldiers were killed in this attack carried out by BH (Boko Haram) on Friday morning in the vicinity of N’Guigmi.” The resident further confirmed that “there were deaths among the assailants” and that “the army is currently conducting sweep operations.”
Soldiers fell in defense of the homeland
Local sources from N’Guigmi corroborated the attack on social media platforms, specifying that “ten military personnel and four members of the national guard were killed.”
While not providing a specific death toll, the official Nigerien Press Agency (ANP) confirmed that the victims “lost their lives following an attack by elements of the Boko Haram sect on the outskirts of N’Guigmi.”
Hours after the tragic incident, General Mahamadou Ibrahim Bagadoma, the Governor of the Diffa region, attended the burial ceremony in N’Guigmi for “members of the Defense and Security Forces who fell with weapons in hand in defense of the homeland,” as reported by the ANP.
Thousands of lives claimed by insurgency
The persistent jihadist insurgency has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions of individuals, particularly in northeastern Nigeria. The violence has tragically spilled over into neighboring Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, prompting these nations to reactivate their “Joint Multinational Force,” initially established in 1994.
In mid-May, Chad responded to deadly Boko Haram attacks against its military by launching aerial strikes and ground operations. These actions targeted Boko Haram positions on remote islands within Lake Chad, carried out with the crucial support of Nigeria and Niger.
Niger also faces a significant challenge in its western territories, where it grapples with deadly violence perpetrated by jihadist groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State organization. The country has been under the leadership of a military regime since July 2023, which continues its efforts to contain these widespread security threats.
