Niger’s president makes historic visit to Ankara amid strengthened bilateral relations

The partnership between Niger and Türkiye reached a new milestone this week during a high-profile official visit to Ankara by Niger’s head of state, General Abdourahamane Tiani. This marked the first overseas trip by the Nigerien president since assuming office, culminating in the signing of multiple cooperation agreements spanning security, economic development, healthcare, education, and diplomatic collaboration.

Key agreements signed to drive future cooperation

During the summit at the Turkish presidential palace, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and General Tiani finalized several landmark documents, including a 2026–2030 higher education cooperation protocol, the establishment of a Joint Economic and Trade Commission (JETCO), an agreement to co-manage the Niger-Türkiye Friendship Hospital, and a diplomatic cooperation memorandum.

Expanding collaboration across vital sectors

Türkiye and Niger are intensifying efforts to strengthen their alliance across defense, energy, mining, agriculture, trade, and investment. Ankara has also pledged to launch a dedicated mechanism aimed at boosting business exchanges between the two capitals. This initiative is poised to unlock new economic opportunities and foster sustainable growth in both nations.

Turkey reaffirms commitment to Sahel security

Erdogan emphasized Ankara’s unwavering support for African nations facing security challenges, particularly in the Sahel. He highlighted plans to deepen military training programs and intelligence-sharing initiatives with partner countries, underlining that Türkiye’s engagement in Africa is rooted in mutual respect, equitable partnership, and shared benefits.

Niger benefits from growing Turkish development support

The Turkish leader underscored several key achievements in Niger, including the operational Niger-Türkiye Friendship Hospital, large-scale irrigation and rural development projects, and educational programs run by the Maarif Foundation. These efforts have enabled nearly 500 Nigerien students to pursue higher education in Türkiye.

Niger’s president hails transformative partnership

General Tiani described the relationship as strategically vital for Niger. He noted that bilateral ties have flourished since Erdogan’s historic visit to Niamey in 2013 and praised Türkiye’s critical role in assisting Niger’s fight against armed groups in the Sahel. He credited this cooperation with enhancing both national security and regional stability.
