Set to become a cornerstone of regional military collaboration, the Morocco–United States joint project will soon unveil a cutting-edge multidomain training and experimentation center in Tan-Tan. This initiative, known as AMTEC, is structured around three core components: a multidomain training area, a drone academy, and an innovation and experimentation hub.
The multidomain training zone will provide advanced facilities for military forces to engage in complex operational scenarios, including full-spectrum electromagnetic environment simulations. Meanwhile, the drone academy will focus on equipping African operators with expertise in small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS), with a strong emphasis on counterterrorism operations across West Africa.
Key military figures emphasize the project’s strategic value. General Mohammed Berrid, Inspector General of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, highlighted the nation’s readiness to operationalize this vision swiftly. «The Kingdom’s existing infrastructure and highly skilled workforce position it as a reliable industrial partner for the United States,» he noted, underscoring Morocco’s pivotal role in this partnership.
The innovation center will serve as a rapid-testing ground for emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and advanced communications. Designed with affordability and scalability in mind, the solutions developed here will align closely with African operational realities, ensuring practical and sustainable advancements.
Beyond its military applications, the project aims to foster economic and technological growth. By integrating industrial and academic stakeholders, AMTEC could cultivate a robust innovation ecosystem around defense technologies. This initiative may also pave the way for breakthroughs in wireless and detection technologies, while supporting development in remote regions.
General Dagvin Anderson, Commander of AFRICOM, described the initiative as «a significant opportunity for both American and African defense industries, as well as academic institutions, to pioneer solutions tailored to emerging challenges.»
The first major milestone for AMTEC will be the African Lion 2027 exercise, serving as a real-world validation of the center’s capabilities. Already a premier annual event in Morocco, this exercise has long been a testing ground for integrating advanced technologies in operational settings.
