Morocco elected as AFCONE commissioner for three-year term

Morocco was unanimously elected as Commissioner of the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) on Friday, for a three-year term.

The election took place during the 7th Conference of States Parties to the Treaty of Pelindaba establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone in Africa, held at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa.

This new election of Morocco to this prestigious Commission reflects the trust placed in the Kingdom, in line with the royal vision, on critical issues related to peace, security, and development.

This trust is materialized by Morocco’s pioneering role as a regional hub in Africa for the peaceful use of nuclear technology to address socio-economic challenges, particularly in health and agriculture, in the face of water stress and the need to ensure food security.

The role of an AFCONE Commissioner, as an organ of the African Union responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Pelindaba Treaty for a nuclear-weapon-free Africa, is both highly strategic, technical, and diplomatic.

Morocco participates in this conference, held in hybrid format, with a delegation led by Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the African Union and UNECA, and including representatives from the National Centre for Energy, Sciences and Nuclear Techniques (CNESTEN) and the Moroccan Agency for Nuclear and Radiological Safety and Security (AMSSNuR).
