Mjällby stuns Gibraltar with historic Champions League win

Sweden’s 2026 champions Mjällby made history in their maiden Champions League campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Gibraltar’s Lincoln Red Imps in Tuesday’s second-round first leg at Strandvallen.

Mjällby’s European debut was nothing short of spectacular. The Swedish side, crowned domestic champions in 2026, dominated the second-round opener against Lincoln Red Imps with a commanding 3-0 win at their 7,000-capacity Strandvallen stadium.

The breakthrough came early, with Faroese forward Aki Samuelsen netting twice in the opening 25 minutes (18’, 24’), before Jacob Bergström added a third before halftime (31’). Though Samuelsen had a chance to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot in the 66th minute, he saw his shot saved, and Mjällby failed to add to their tally in the second half.

Gibraltar awaits for second leg showdown

Mjällby will now head to Gibraltar for the second leg next Tuesday at 6 PM local time. The winners of this tie will advance to face either Georgia’s Iberia 1999 or Slovakia’s Slovan Bratislava — the latter having secured a 2-0 away win earlier in the evening.

Looking ahead, the second round of Champions League qualifying features heavyweights like Fenerbahçe, Thun, Dinamo Zagreb, Hearts, Red Star Belgrade, and Kairat Almaty.
