The Olympique de Marseille may soon bid farewell to another key player after Mason Greenwood. Reports indicate that AC Milan is seriously considering signing Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, a move that could reshape the Rossoneri’s midfield dynamics. Meanwhile, the Phocéens are under pressure to trim their wage bill and secure fresh financial resources.
Højbjerg emerges as Milan’s midfield target
The transfer saga has not yet reached advanced negotiations. AC Milan’s manager, Ruben Amorim, prefers to assess his squad during pre-season before deciding if a midfield reinforcement is needed. Should a Milanese player depart, Højbjerg could quickly rise to the top of the club’s priority list.
Currently under contract with Marseille until 2028, Højbjerg is not being retained at all costs. The Ligue 1 club may accept an offer close to €10 million, a reasonable fee for a 30-year-old earning a high salary. The Danish international has also expressed a strong preference for playing in Italy, where several clubs have been monitoring his situation for weeks.
Reuniting with an old teammate
If Højbjerg joins AC Milan, he would reunite with Adrien Rabiot, his former Marseille teammate. Last season, Højbjerg contributed four goals and five assists in 32 Ligue 1 appearances, bringing valuable experience and a combative edge to Amorim’s lineup. For Marseille, losing Højbjerg would be a significant financial gain but a major sporting setback, following Greenwood’s departure.
