By 29 June 2026, construction of the approach roads to the bridge over the Nyong River at Malombo, in the Nyong-et-Kellé department, was in its final stages. After finishing the road surface, teams from the company CFHEC have begun installing signage.

Work on the access routes to the Malombo bridge is virtually complete. The contractor started laying road markings and carrying out drainage works a few days ago. These approach roads, spanning 960 metres across both riverbanks, feature a cross-section of one dual carriageway with two 3.5-metre lanes and two 1.5-metre shoulders on each side.

The pavement structure comprises a 25 cm lateritic gravel sub-base, a 20 cm crushed gravel base course (0/31.5), and a 5 cm bituminous concrete wearing course. Finishing touches are also under way on the bridge itself over the Nyong.

Officials from the Ministry of Public Works are confident that the Malombo bridge will be handed over well ahead of the contractual schedule – roughly eight months before the original deadline. By 11 June, the Nyong’s waters had receded enough to allow completion of the 160-metre structure, which now only awaits signage. The spans, erected months ago to support the twin‑girder steel‑concrete composite deck, are ready to carry local traffic. Progress on the approach roads is equally advanced.

CFHEC will now focus on finalising the work and preparing for project delivery. The supervisory mission is carried out by the INTEGC/GENERAL ENGINEERING joint venture. At the heart of this effort, the client – the Ministry of Public Works – has provided consistent oversight and support since the project began.

The project has not been without its difficulties: disputes over the location of the base camp, challenges in acclimatising personnel, repeated fuel theft from the contractor’s tanks – both day and night – occasional hostility from local communities, burglaries at the base camp, delayed payment certificates, torrential rains and rising river levels. Yet none of these obstacles prevented CFHEC from honouring the commitment made on the day construction was launched: to deliver the structure ahead of schedule, as instructed by the project owner.
