In a show of solidarity with victims of recent violence, a high-level Mali government delegation, led by Minister of State for Reconciliation, Peace and National Cohesion General Ismaël Wagué, arrived in Bandiagara on Monday, May 11, 2026. The visit followed a brutal terrorist assault on the villages of Kori-Kori and Gomossogou in the Bankass district on May 6, which left deep scars in the community.
The delegation formally conveyed the State’s condolences during an official ceremony at the regional governor’s office. As part of the relief effort, vital supplies were delivered: 25 metric tons of millet, 25 metric tons of rice, and a financial aid package totaling 20 million FCFA. These resources aim to support survivors and help restore stability in the affected areas.
General Wagué attributed the attack to fighters from the JNIM group, though authorities have yet to release an official death toll. Meanwhile, local self-defense militias known as Dozos reported over 60 fatalities, numerous injuries, and severe property damage. Youssouf Toloba, leader of the Dana Ambassagou militia, claimed the villages were targeted after refusing to sign so-called “peace agreements” with armed extremist factions. Noël Tessougué, deputy chief of the Dozos, warned that the militia would no longer tolerate villages that strike deals with JNIM combatants.
During his address, Minister Wagué reaffirmed the transitional government’s commitment to ending violence against civilians nationwide. He closed with a call for unity, solidarity, and national cohesion to confront the ongoing security threats.
