In late April, a coordinated offensive by the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM)—an Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group—and the Front de Libération de l’Azawad (FLA), a Tuareg rebel faction, overwhelmed Malian forces and their Russian allies, the Africa Corps, in multiple regions. This unprecedented assault has now placed Kidal under the control of the FLA, a territory recovered by the Malian military in late 2023.
As a result of the fighting, the entire civilian population has fled the city. The rebels, now aligned with JNIM, are preparing for a potential counteroffensive by the Malian government. Our team recently spent time with FLA members in Kidal to document this rapidly evolving situation.
