In late April, a coordinated offensive by the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM)—an Al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorist group—and the Front de Libération de l’Azawad (FLA), a Tuareg rebel faction, overwhelmed Malian forces and their Russian allies, the Africa Corps, in multiple regions. This unprecedented assault has now placed Kidal under the control of the FLA, a territory recovered by the Malian military in late 2023.
As a result of the fighting, the entire civilian population has fled the city. The rebels, now aligned with JNIM, are preparing for a potential counteroffensive by the Malian government. Our team recently spent time with FLA members in Kidal to document this rapidly evolving situation.
what happened in Kidal
The sudden collapse of defense lines in southern Mali revealed deep vulnerabilities in the military’s positioning. The joint operation between JNIM and the FLA exploited these weaknesses, leading to a swift and decisive takeover of key cities.
The rebels took advantage of the vacuum left by retreating government troops and their foreign allies, seizing control of Kidal without significant resistance. The population, caught in the crossfire, had no choice but to evacuate, leaving behind a city now under new leadership.
the role of allied armed groups
The FLA, historically seeking autonomy for the Azawad region, has formed an uneasy alliance with JNIM. While their goals differ—one political, the other ideological—both groups share a common enemy: the Malian government and its external partners.
This unexpected cooperation has reshaped the conflict landscape, posing a major challenge to the authorities in Bamako. The alliance also raises concerns about the future stability of the region and the potential for further escalation.
what’s next for Mali
- military response: the Malian government is expected to launch a counteroffensive to reclaim lost territory, with support from the Africa Corps.
- civilian impact: thousands of displaced people are seeking shelter in neighboring towns, straining local resources.
- regional implications: neighboring countries are monitoring the situation closely, wary of potential spillover effects.
The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether the Malian government can regain control or if the rebels will consolidate their gains.
