Following a tenure that began in the summer of 2024, Belgian football coach Tom Saintfiet has officially announced his departure from his role as head coach of the Mali national team. His resignation comes at a time of escalating political instability and heightened security concerns in the country, compounded by recent offensives carried out by jihadist groups and Tuareg rebels.

Tom Saintfiet is no longer the Mali national team coach. The 53-year-old Belgian, who took charge in August 2024, revealed his immediate resignation in a late-night statement. His decision follows a period marked by extreme challenges, including regional conflicts and shifting power dynamics within the nation.

« Today marks the end of my mission as head coach of the Mali senior national team. I leave with pride and dedication, despite the obstacles encountered along the way. It is now time for me to pursue a new challenge, » Tom Saintfiet shared in a Facebook post dated April 27, 2026.

Tom Saintfiet’s legacy: two defeats in 17 matches

Under his guidance, Mali showed resilience in the World Cup qualifiers, suffering only two losses in 17 games. One of those defeats occurred in the quarter-finals of the recent Africa Cup of Nations, where the team was edged out 1-0 by Senegal. Saintfiet, who succeeded Éric Chelle as coach, emphasized the unifying power of football amid difficult times.

« In these exceptionally challenging circumstances facing Mali, my heartfelt thoughts go out to the Malian people and the nation as a whole. I send a message of compassion, solidarity, and unity. Football is, above all, a sport that brings people together—a force for peace and hope for Mali, » he stated.

Saintfiet, who had previously been linked to the position of coach for Ghana before Carlos Queiroz was appointed, concluded his message with a hopeful note for the future of Malian football. The Malian Football Federation (FMF), represented by its president Mahamadou Baba Cissé, acknowledged Saintfiet’s contributions and issued a call for new applications to fill the vacant position.
