The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared a strategic shift in the ongoing conflict, asserting full operational control over areas previously contested by armed factions in the north and central regions. This decisive move comes after intense military engagements aimed at neutralizing threats posed by the National Movement for the Liberation of the Azawad (MNLA) and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate operating across central and southern Mali.
According to an official statement released by the FAMA, combat operations resumed Sunday in Anifif, a strategic location situated 110 kilometers south of Kidal. The renewed clashes followed the arrival of additional reinforcements for the MNLA, prompting a robust response from Malian troops reinforced with fresh personnel and equipment.
The military communiqué emphasized the unwavering commitment of Malian soldiers, stating: “Confronted with these aggressive maneuvers, our units engaged with resolute determination and discipline, sustaining combat operations throughout the day with courage and professionalism.” The statement further reaffirmed the FAMA’s unshakable confidence in their capacity to safeguard national unity, protect civilians, and dismantle enemy forces.
In a contrasting narrative, the MNLA’s spokesperson, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had previously claimed control over Anifif following the resumption of hostilities. He also refuted rumors of the MNLA leader Mbarek Ag Akli‘s death, asserting that the commander remains actively involved in directing military operations across northern Mali.
