Mali’s military neutralizes influential jihadist commander in precision drone strike
The Malian Armed Forces have confirmed the elimination of a high-ranking jihadist leader linked to the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM) during a targeted drone operation on June 3 in the village of Mougnan, located approximately 40 kilometers from Djenné in central Mali. This development follows the government’s recent announcement of unprecedented financial incentives for information leading to the capture of prominent armed group leaders.
Oumar Kéréna—also known by his aliases Farouk and Housseini Mawdo—was identified as a former member of the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa before rising through the ranks to become a key figure within Mali’s jihadist networks.
A central figure in regional extremist networks
According to military sources, the commander had previously operated in the Serma area before expanding his influence to multiple zones in Sikasso and Koutiala regions, as well as cross-border regions in neighboring Burkina Faso. His elimination is considered a significant blow to the JNIM’s operational capabilities, as he reportedly coordinated activities among affiliated cells across the Sahel.
Bamako intensifies counter-terrorism efforts
The successful operation comes shortly after Mali’s government implemented a sweeping new incentive program on June 4, offering financial rewards of up to two billion West African CFA francs for credible information leading to the capture or elimination of senior terrorists and armed group leaders. The highest bounty targets Iyad Ag Ghali, Mali’s most-wanted fugitive, who heads the JNIM coalition.
This military success underscores Bamako’s escalating counter-terrorism strategy amid a persistent surge in armed attacks and security challenges plaguing central and northern Mali, as well as the broader Sahel region.

The drone strike occurred in Mougnan, a strategic location that has emerged as a focal point for security operations targeting extremist networks operating between Djenné and other vulnerable areas. The commander’s death represents one of the most significant security gains for Malian forces in recent months, coming at a time when civilian and military authorities are under mounting pressure to restore stability in regions frequently targeted by jihadist violence.
