Cotonou and Ottawa have officially launched a new era in their diplomatic relations by establishing a permanent framework for political and diplomatic dialogue. This initiative aims to strengthen structured consultations and ensure consistent follow-up on shared commitments between the two nations.
Strengthening bilateral cooperation
The agreement was formalized through the signing of a memorandum by Amori Brunet, Benin’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Anita Anand, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. According to the Beninese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this mechanism will « streamline the monitoring of mutual commitments, prepare upcoming bilateral actions, and enhance coordination on regional and international issues of common interest. »
This collaboration builds on decades of diplomatic ties, with formal relations established in 1962. Since then, the partnership has flourished across key sectors such as economic development, public health, and education. Bilateral trade continues to thrive, with annual exchanges exceeding 40 million Canadian dollars.
Technical consultations pave the way for new commitments
The announcement follows the accreditation of Canada’s new ambassador, whose credentials were presented on August 3. The diplomatic handover ceremony paved the way for intensive technical discussions involving key Beninese officials, including Hugues Oscar Lokossou, Deputy Minister in charge of External Resource Mobilization and Debt Management, and Shegun Bakari, Minister of Tourism, Foreign Trade, Industry, and Private Investment Promotion.
These meetings underscored the renewed commitment of both nations to foster a robust and enduring bilateral governance structure, designed to serve their shared diplomatic and economic agendas.
