kristalina georgieva and bassirou diomaye faye discuss Senegal’s debt and economic reforms

Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), recently engaged with Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to deliberate on critical economic adjustments and the nation’s debt management. While these discussions signal positive engagement, Senegal continues to await progress on its financial program amidst a challenging global economic landscape.

FMI–Sénégal : Kristalina Georgieva évoque la dette et les réformes après son échange avec Diomaye

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal held discussions with Kristalina Georgieva on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the Africa Forward summit hosted in Nairobi.

Following this high-level meeting, the IMF’s Managing Director confirmed that her talks with the Senegalese Head of State encompassed a range of significant economic matters.

« We discussed reform priorities, debt management, and the significance of Senegal’s efforts towards transparency, » Georgieva posted on the social media platform X.

IMF’s Enduring Commitment to Senegal’s Economic Future

Kristalina Georgieva reiterated the IMF’s dedication to supporting Senegal. However, there was no official announcement regarding the new financial assistance program that Dakar has been seeking for almost two years.

Last April, Abebe Aemro Selassie had previously outlined the reasons behind the delays in negotiations between Senegal and the international financial body.

He explained that the prevailing conditions in global financial markets complicate the assessments necessary for determining Senegal’s debt viability.

« This process necessitates forecasting economic outlooks and market access conditions. Given the volatile environment for countries facing precarious market access, this task demands significant rigor and thorough deliberation. Committing to an irreversible path is not the optimal solution, » he stated.

Crafting a Credible and Sustainable Economic Strategy

The IMF official further clarified that the institution aimed to allow the Senegalese government ample time to formulate an economic strategy deemed both credible and sustainable.

« Our intention was to provide the government with sufficient time to develop a strategy that is credible, financeable, and avoids imposing excessive austerity on the Senegalese population. These deliberations require profound thought and discussion, and it is primarily the government’s responsibility to lead them. We are currently at this juncture, » he elaborated.

Abebe Aemro Selassie also underscored that the incoming Senegalese administration inherited a substantial level of debt, emphasizing that the immediate priority is to identify the most effective approaches to address this economic challenge.
