Ambush hits Russian convoy between Tiemaba and Wewo
Security tensions remain high in central Mali. On Monday 28 September, late in the morning, a military convoy carrying elements of the Russian paramilitary structure Africa Corps — the successor to the Wagner company in the Sahel theater — was hit by a deadly ambush between the localities of Tiemaba and Wewo, located north of the town of Niono, in the Ségou region.
Area under Katiba Macina influence
The Niono sector has been identified for several years as a major area of influence for Katiba Macina, one of the key components of JNIM, the jihadist alliance affiliated with Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQMI).
According to local and security sources, the attacked convoy was unusual in that it was composed almost exclusively of Russian fighters. This configuration differs from the patrols usually observed on the ground, where Africa Corps units generally operate in tandem with the Malian Armed Forces (FAMA).
Casualty claims and JNIM statement
In a statement released shortly after the attack, the jihadist group JNIM claimed responsibility for the operation, asserting that it had neutralized or wounded at least seven members of the Russian contingent and seized a significant amount of military equipment before withdrawing. Meanwhile, several local sources contacted in the region reported at least four Russian fighters killed during the clashes.
Neither the General Staff of the Malian Armed Forces nor Africa Corps officials have published an official toll regarding this specific incident. However, the Malian army communicated the following day about conducting several targeted airstrikes in neighboring sectors, notably near Dioura, targeting identified terrorist positions.
