French prime minister's Rabat visit to strengthen strategic ties with Morocco

French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu landed in Rabat Wednesday evening for a two-day official visit designed to reinforce the strategic partnership between France and Morocco. The visit comes amid growing diplomatic rapprochement between the two nations.

Welcomed by Moroccan Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch, Lecornu arrived with a delegation of twelve French ministers. This visit follows years of sometimes strained relations as both countries seek to deepen cooperation.

During his stay, Sébastien Lecornu and Aziz Akhannouch will hold a bilateral meeting before co-chairing the 15th edition of the High-Level Franco-Moroccan Meeting. This key political and economic dialogue framework, one of the primary consultation mechanisms between the two countries, hasn’t convened since 2019.

Discussions are expected to focus on strengthening economic exchanges, developing cross-border investments, security and defense cooperation, as well as energy, infrastructure, and ecological transition issues.

French and Moroccan authorities anticipate signing around fifteen agreements during this visit. These documents will cover civil aviation, water management, strategic infrastructure, electricity interconnection, security cooperation, and multiple cultural projects.

In the cultural sphere, both parties are set to finalize a strategic partnership between the Arab World Institute in Paris and Morocco’s Ministry of Culture. The initiative aims to strengthen artistic, heritage, and academic exchanges between the two nations.
