French football league sanctions FC Nantes with closed-door match after pitch invasion
The French football governing body has handed down a stern penalty to FC Nantes following the chaotic conclusion of their final Ligue 1 fixture against Toulouse. The match was abandoned after home supporters stormed the pitch in protest over the club’s relegation.
The Ligue de Football Professionnel’s disciplinary committee delivered its verdict on Wednesday, confirming FC Nantes will face their next league game behind closed doors. The decision comes after ultras invaded the pitch during the 17 May clash, which had been suspended at 0-0 when the invasion occurred.
No points deduction
The disciplinary body also ratified the match score as 0-0, effectively closing the book on the abandoned fixture. Notably, the club avoided harsher punishment that could have included point deductions for their upcoming Ligue 2 campaign.
In addition to the full stadium closure, FC Nantes will see their Loire stand – the source of the disturbances – remain shuttered for two more matches. The measures reflect the league’s zero-tolerance stance on pitch invasions and supporter misconduct.
While the sanctions could have been more severe, the disciplinary committee ultimately opted against imposing additional sporting penalties on the Canaries. The club now faces the challenge of rebuilding both on and off the pitch as they prepare for life in France’s second tier.
