Burkina Faso authorities clamp down on student activists amid security concerns

The Union générale des étudiants burkinabè (Ugeb) has found itself at the center of a political storm in Burkina Faso after publicly criticizing the military government’s inability to restore security, despite promises made following the 2022 coup led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

In a bold statement released on the 36th anniversary of student activist Dabo Boukary’s assassination under former President Blaise Compaoré’s regime, the Ugeb condemned what it described as ‘the military regime’s failure to ensure citizen safety.’ Days later, the association’s leadership and members faced what they describe as ‘violent and unlawful arrests’ carried out by unidentified armed individuals in civilian clothing.

Government responds with terrorism charges and suspension

Following these events, Burkina Faso’s Ministry of Territorial Administration announced the immediate suspension of the Ugeb for three months, with the possibility of extension. During this period, the student union is prohibited from organizing any activities. The government justified this decision by accusing the association of ‘glorifying terrorism,’ a charge that carries serious legal consequences.

The Office of the Public Prosecutor of Faso subsequently opened a judicial investigation into what it termed ‘serious allegations.’ According to official statements, the actions in question may constitute violations of the Burkinabè penal code, specifically relating to ‘attempts to demoralize defense and security forces.’

The prosecutor emphasized that public ‘glorification of terrorist acts’ is punishable by imprisonment ranging from one to ten years under current legislation.

Student leaders face legal consequences

The Ugeb’s president was among those detained during the crackdown, with the association reporting heavy-handed tactics during the arrests. Legal experts suggest these developments signal a tightening of restrictions on political expression, particularly for youth organizations critical of government policies.

The suspension comes at a particularly sensitive time as Burkina Faso continues to grapple with escalating security challenges and the ongoing fight against armed groups operating across the Sahel region.
