During the 62nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Omar Zniber, delivered a joint statement on behalf of forty countries, reaffirming that the Western Sahara issue remains firmly within the framework of the political process outlined by the United Nations and guided by the Security Council.

The communiqué highlighted that Morocco’s autonomy initiative represents a serious and realistic foundation for achieving a durable political resolution to the conflict while reiterating support for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which aims to restart political negotiations with the participation of all concerned parties.

Nations backing the initiative also commended Morocco for developing the autonomy proposal and praised its commitment to integrating residents of the Tindouf camps while ensuring their rights align with those of other Moroccan citizens. Additionally, they recognized Morocco’s cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms, deeming it a positive step toward advancing and protecting fundamental rights and freedoms.

The statement emphasized that the establishment of consulates by multiple countries in Laayoune and Dakhla reflects the growing international backing for Morocco’s position and contributes to strengthening development, investment, and regional cooperation in the southern provinces. The group concluded by asserting that resolving the conflict would catalyze integration and development across African and Arab regions.
