Patrice Talon elected head of Benin’s inaugural senate
Just four months after concluding his presidential mandate, former Benin leader Patrice Talon has assumed a new role as president of the nation’s first-ever Senate. This landmark institution emerged from the 2025 constitutional reforms designed to modernize the country’s political framework.
Former President Patrice Talon secured 24 out of 25 votes to become the inaugural president of Benin’s new Senate on August 6th. The chamber, which began operations in late July, comprises 25 members including former presidents and presidential appointees, reflecting the 2025 constitutional changes.
Paving the way for institutional renewal
During his inauguration speech in Porto-Novo, Talon outlined his vision for the Senate as a unifying force committed to strengthening national unity, political stability, democracy and peace. He emphasized the institution’s role in fostering collaboration among members including former presidents Thomas Boni Yayi and Nicéphore Soglo, as well as opposition figure Paul Hounkpè. The new Senate represents one of the most significant institutional innovations introduced through recent constitutional amendments aimed at enhancing governance.
Talon’s election comes shortly after he peacefully transferred power to Romuald Wadagni, his former Economy Minister who was elected president in April of this year.
