Manon Aubry condemns anti-LGBTQ+ crackdown in Senegal
French Member of the European Parliament Manon Aubry has raised urgent concerns over the escalating persecution of LGBTQ+ individuals in Senegal, calling for immediate action from European leaders to protect those at risk.
Growing anti-LGBTQ+ legislation fuels persecution
Manon Aubry, a prominent voice in the European Parliament and leader of the Left Group, has sharply criticized Senegal’s enforcement of laws targeting same-sex relationships, which now carry penalties of up to a decade behind bars. In a powerful statement, she described the situation as a “persecution” of LGBTQ+ individuals, emphasizing the urgent need for international intervention.
Support for victims and diplomatic pressure
The French politician also extended solidarity to a French national currently detained under these laws, urging French authorities to secure his release and provide asylum to Senegalese refugees fleeing persecution. “Solidarity with LGBTQ+ communities in Senegal is non-negotiable. The French government must act swiftly to protect lives and uphold human rights,” Aubry stated.
Her remarks come amid reports of increased arrests and social stigma faced by LGBTQ+ individuals across the country, highlighting the harsh realities of living under such legislation.
