  • Human rights defenders across the Sahel are facing unprecedented targeting as civic space shrinks and public freedoms come under threat.
  • The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders (a joint program of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT)) has released a report exposing shared repression trends in Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Chad. The document analyzes 61 documented cases of fundamental rights violations against human rights defenders in these four countries over the past five years.
  • The report offers tailored recommendations for the governments of these nations and regional and international bodies to safeguard human rights defenders—a critical step toward restoring civic space and democratic expression.

Paris, Geneva — Over recent years, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Chad have undergone significant political upheavals. The rise of military-led governments and subsequent transition periods in these countries have coincided with a sharp increase in repression against human rights defenders and a dramatic narrowing of civic space.

Today’s report by the Observatory, titled “Civic Space and Human Rights Defenders in the Sahel: Regional Convergence of Repression Tactics”, reveals how authorities in these four nations have adopted strikingly similar methods to silence dissent. Widespread practices include arbitrary arrests and detentions, relentless judicial harassment, abductions, forced disappearances, torture, and even online threats and intimidation.

« The detailed documentation of 61 cases of attacks against human rights defenders and civic space in the Sahel over the past five years paints an alarming picture: governments in Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Chad appear locked in an endless cycle of repression. Yet this cycle must end. These nations must uphold the rule of law and democracy—values to which the people of the Sahel are deeply committed. This is the struggle of human rights defenders, and we stand firmly in solidarity with them, » declares Drissa Traore, Secretary-General of the FIDH.

Beyond direct attacks on defenders, authorities in these countries are systematically restricting fundamental freedoms. Protests are banned or violently suppressed, associations dissolved, and media outlets controlled—sometimes even suspended. These actions blatantly contradict the regional and international obligations these nations have pledged to honor, further dimming hopes for a rights-respecting resolution to their crises.

« It is high time for authorities in Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Chad to comply with their international obligations and cease their repression of civil society. We also urge the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the United Nations, and international partners of these countries to take all necessary measures to halt these violations of fundamental rights and freedoms, » states Gerald Staberock, Secretary-General of the OMCT.
