By January 1, 2027, travelers from every African nation will be able to enter Chad without a visa. The landmark announcement was made by President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno during the African Water Forum in N’Djamena, signaling a bold step toward fostering continental unity and mobility.

Diplomatic milestone: Chad joins the visa-free movement

N’Djamena recently hosted a high-profile gathering of African leaders and dignitaries at the African Water Forum, where President Déby Itno unveiled a game-changing policy. The decision to eliminate visa requirements for all Africans reflects Chad’s commitment to strengthening regional integration and economic ties across the continent.

Under the new rule, passport holders from every African country—whether traveling for business, tourism, or transit—will no longer need to secure a visa before arriving in Chad. The move is expected to simplify cross-border movements and encourage greater collaboration among African nations.

Chad’s vision for an interconnected Africa

In his address, President Déby Itno framed Chad as a natural bridge between Africa’s diverse regions. He emphasized the country’s historical role as a hub for human encounters and cultural exchange, underscoring its potential as a unifying force on the continent.

« Chad stands at the heart of Africa—a crossroads where West meets East, North meets South. We are a nation of welcome, a champion of African unity, » he declared from the podium.

The announcement was framed as part of a broader vision for continental freedom of movement. « Beyond this gathering, and in line with our commitment to African integration and the free circulation of people and goods, I stand before you today to declare that Chad, the land of Toumaï and humanity’s cradle, will open its borders and abolish visas for all Africans starting January 1, 2027, » he added.

Chad joins Africa’s visa-free vanguard

This progressive policy positions Chad among a select group of African nations that have fully embraced visa-free travel for fellow Africans. The country now joins peers such as Benin, Togo, Rwanda, Ghana, Gambia, Seychelles, and the Republic of the Congo, all of which have taken similar steps to ease mobility across the continent.

The move is seen as a strategic investment in regional cooperation, potentially boosting trade, tourism, and cultural exchange within Africa. By removing bureaucratic hurdles, Chad is positioning itself as a more accessible and welcoming destination for travelers and investors alike.
