Chad’s energy sector is on the cusp of a major breakthrough with the advancement of a new 40 MW power plant project in N’Djamena, spearheaded by a strategic collaboration with Algeria’s leading energy firm, Sonelgaz. A high-level delegation led by Sonelgaz International CEO Yazid Djellouli recently concluded a working visit to Chad’s capital to finalize technical specifications and operational milestones alongside Tchad-Elec representatives.
At the heart of this initiative is a cutting-edge tri-fuel power plant, designed to operate seamlessly using natural gas, liquid fuels, or a combination of both. For N’Djamena—where persistent power outages and rising electricity demand strain the grid—this adaptability ensures a more resilient energy supply. The plant can dynamically adjust its fuel mix based on local availability or import costs, providing a critical buffer against supply disruptions.
Beyond mere power generation, the partnership embeds a knowledge-sharing framework. Sonelgaz, renowned for its expertise in managing large-scale energy networks across North Africa, will train and support engineers from Chad’s national utility, Société Nationale d’Électricité (SNE). This capacity-building initiative is pivotal for sustaining long-term operations and reducing reliance on external technical support.
The implications for Chad stretch far beyond infrastructure. By diversifying its energy mix and embracing flexible technologies, the country aims to curb its dependence on expensive fossil fuels while reinforcing national energy security. The project’s progress sends a strong signal to investors, underscoring N’Djamena’s commitment to a reliable electricity supply—a cornerstone for industrial growth and economic expansion.
