In a bold move to address Chad’s deepening political crisis, the country’s Catholic bishops have issued a powerful call for immediate dialogue and national reconciliation. The statement, released on Tuesday, May 6, reflects growing alarm over the escalating violence and political unrest that has gripped the nation in recent weeks.

The prelates emphasized that sincere and inclusive dialogue remains the only viable path forward, warning that continued unrest threatens to plunge the country into deeper turmoil. «The current impasse demands urgent action, and we believe constructive engagement between all stakeholders is essential,» they declared in their communiqué.

Condemnation of intercommunal violence and human rights abuses

The bishops expressed profound concern over the recent surge in intercommunal violence, particularly in Dar Tama (Wadi Fira) and Guéra. The most recent tragedy occurred on May 5 when an attack on a military base in Barka Toulorom (Lake Chad) resulted in at least 23 fatalities, according to official government reports. Just days earlier, on April 26, intercommunal clashes in eastern Chad claimed the lives of 42 individuals.

The bishops condemned these acts of violence in the strongest terms, reaffirming that no one has the right to take a human life. They warned that violence only exacerbates divisions and deepens societal fractures, stressing that «violence cannot and must not be a solution to our differences».

In their statement, the bishops also decried the recent wave of arrests targeting opposition figures and critical voices. They argued that such actions undermine Chad’s democratic foundations, particularly the principles of freedom of expression and human rights. «These measures weaken our already fragile social cohesion and threaten the very fabric of our national unity,» they warned.

Advocating for pluralism and a return to dialogue

The bishops underscored the importance of respecting cultural, political, and religious diversity as a cornerstone for building a strong and just nation. «Diversity is not an obstacle but a strength in constructing a unified and resilient Chad,» they asserted. They called for an end to exclusion, injustice, and violence, emphasizing that these ills can only be overcome through dialogue, justice, and mutual respect.

In their appeal, the bishops urged authorities to demonstrate wisdom and restraint, fostering an environment where trust and reconciliation can flourish. «Peace is a precious gift that we must all strive to preserve,» they noted. They extended their heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and called on all citizens to unite in solidarity during these challenging times.

The bishops’ message serves as a reminder of the critical role religious leaders can play in mediating conflicts and promoting peace. Their call for dialogue comes at a time when Chad is facing one of its most difficult periods in recent history, with tensions running high and the future of the nation hanging in the balance.
