Borussia Dortmund has dramatically pulled out of the race to acquire promising Cologne talent Said El Mala. This development occurred after the Bundesliga club saw its significant transfer offer, valued at over €50 million, turned down by its domestic rival.

The definitive proposal was recently presented to Cologne’s sporting director, Thomas Kessler, by Dortmund executives Lars Ricken and Ole Book. However, an agreement could not be reached, leading Dortmund to completely exit the negotiation table. This major turn of events brings an end to one of the summer’s most anticipated transfer sagas, with the player now expected to remain with his current club for the upcoming season.

Lars Ricken, Borussia Dortmund’s General Manager for Sport, has publicly affirmed that the club will no longer pursue the talented young prospect. He provided a clear statement regarding the aborted transfer.

“Said El Mala is not a Borussia Dortmund player and will not be joining us this summer,” Ricken confirmed. “We engaged in open discussions with 1. FC Köln’s management over the past few days, but they ultimately rejected our final proposition. Borussia Dortmund will not present any further offers and will discontinue its efforts to secure the player’s transfer.”

While the overall financial package presented was indeed substantial, the proposed deal’s intricate structure ultimately led to the collapse of negotiations. The initial transfer fee offered by Borussia Dortmund was reportedly around €46 million.

Including various performance-related bonuses, the total package could have reached an estimated €52 million to €53 million, marginally surpassing Cologne’s €50 million valuation. However, Cologne expressed significant dissatisfaction with the stringent conditions attached to these potential bonuses.

The proposed bonus payments were structured over an exceptionally long timeframe and were heavily contingent on the player achieving a high number of first-team appearances, leaving Cologne with insufficient financial assurances.

With Borussia Dortmund’s definitive withdrawal from negotiations, Said El Mala is now expected to continue his immediate development at FC Cologne. The highly promising young talent will now shift his full attention to the upcoming season alongside his current teammates.
