Invited as an expert to the annual session of the World Customs Organization (WCO) Council, Special Prosecutor Mario Mètonou represented Bénin in Brussels on Friday, June 26, 2026, during a high-level panel on combating drug trafficking. His participation highlights Bénin’s expertise in judicial cooperation and organized crime fighting. Addressing the 187 directors general of customs gathered at this global session, the Beninese magistrate delivered a structured analysis of modern mechanisms to combat transnational criminal networks.
He stressed the urgent need for close collaboration between judicial authorities and customs administrations — a crucial condition for making repression and prevention systems more effective. During his address, Mario Mètonou also highlighted the central role of international cooperation and information sharing.
According to him, these mechanisms are decisive tools for anticipating illicit flows, dismantling organized networks, and sustainably curbing drug trafficking — which continues to pose a major threat to state security.
