Bénin’s Minister for Small and Medium Enterprises and Employment Promotion, Awaou Baco, recently concluded a significant two-day tour across the Alibori and Borgou departments. From July 28 to 29, 2026, the minister connected directly with various small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), dedicated artisans, livestock breeders, vocational training centers, and young beneficiaries of the impactful AZOLI program.
The primary goal of this extensive tour was to establish direct contact with various entities under the ministry’s purview and to thoroughly assess the support mechanisms available for young people, women, skilled artisans, and individuals with disabilities. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to fostering economic growth and inclusion across Bénin.
The initial phase of the visit commenced on Tuesday, July 28, in the Alibori department. Following a productive discussion with Prefect Ahmed Bello Ky-Sama, Minister Baco proceeded to Malanville, where she engaged with key SME leaders, automotive mechanics, and local rabbit farmers. This direct interaction allowed for a deeper understanding of their operational challenges and potential growth areas.
In Nikki, Awaou Baco also toured the Professional Artisan Training Center. Here, she held detailed discussions with both the center’s management and its students, focusing on the diverse training programs offered and the prospective career opportunities available upon completion.
Subsequently, the minister convened a working session with young individuals at the Kandi town hall. Reports from the tour indicate that these discussions centered on the numerous opportunities provided by public initiatives concerning training, employment, and entrepreneurship, highlighting pathways for youth empowerment.
The AZOLI program mobilizes youth and individuals with disabilities
On Wednesday, July 29, the ministerial delegation continued its journey into the Borgou department, beginning with a courtesy visit to Prefect Abdoul Chakour Assouma Naro.
At the Amaldi Prestige Hotel, Minister Baco met with approximately fifty young beneficiaries of the AZOLI program, hailing from the four northern departments. These participants were actively engaged in apprenticeships. The conversations focused on their training progress and the various integration possibilities available after completing the program.
Another vital aspect of the AZOLI program involves 46 individuals with disabilities who are receiving training in shoemaking and leather goods. This component is specifically designed to enhance their professional skills and promote economic self-reliance, fostering greater inclusion in the workforce.
The tour also included a stop at ASAFMA, an SME specializing in welding, fitting, and the manufacturing of machinery for the agro-food sector. This enterprise benefits from comprehensive support provided by the Agency for the Development of Small and Medium Enterprises, the Project to Support Entrepreneurship in Bénin, and the Bénin Chamber of Crafts.
Digital platforms presented as access points to public initiatives
The delegation concluded its visits at Delika’s Tissage, an artisan enterprise dedicated to weaving traditional loincloths, producing woven strips, and crafting personalized items. The founder of this company diligently develops products inspired by local textile expertise, preserving cultural heritage while creating economic value.
At each location, the minister strongly encouraged young people, artisans, and SME promoters to utilize the digital platforms SICA and e-PME. These essential tools are designed to streamline access to crucial information regarding business support, financing opportunities, company formalization, and professional integration, making it easier for entrepreneurs to thrive.
Awaou Baco also urged project initiators to demonstrate unwavering perseverance in their ventures. The government, according to the tour’s summary, remains committed to advancing reforms and investments aimed at boosting employment and entrepreneurship among Bénin’s youth and women, ensuring a prosperous future for all.
