Precision intervention along the Sonahoulou-Djougou corridor
The operation reached its climax at the critical Sonahoulou-Djougou axis, where intelligence reports had signaled suspicious activity. Customs agents from the Atacora-Donga anti-fraud regional unit, under the command of First-Class Inspector Parfait Laurent Mekoun, set up targeted roadblocks at the Anoum checkpoint.
Routine inspection of a suspect vehicle quickly escalated into a high-stakes operation. What appeared to be an ordinary cargo shipment concealed a lethal payload. Traffickers had meticulously hidden explosives within consumer goods, layering the illicit cargo to evade detection. The sharp-eyed customs team, however, uncovered the hidden stash before the vehicle could proceed, preventing what could have been a catastrophic outcome.
While the driver managed to flee into the surrounding darkness, the evidence left behind—including packaging materials and partial cargo—has provided investigators with critical leads to dismantle the wider smuggling network.
A haul of unprecedented scale
The subsequent inventory revealed the sheer magnitude of the seized materials. Authorities recovered 3,295 high-grade explosive sticks, distributed across 10 bags totaling nearly 500 kilograms. Tracing the origin led investigators to Kétao, a town just across the border in Togo, with the intercepted convoy destined for Malanville—a key border town in northern Benin.
The intended route raised immediate concerns. Malanville, positioned at the frontier with Niger and near areas experiencing heightened security tensions, serves as a critical transit point. A full judicial inquiry has been launched to trace the supply chain, identify key players, and dismantle the transnational smuggling operation at its roots.
Nationwide crackdown targets organized crime and counterfeit goods
This explosives seizure is not an isolated incident but part of a broader, intensified enforcement drive across Benin, spearheaded by Director General of Customs, Colonel Raouf Malèhossou Aboudou. Under his leadership, the customs service has launched a series of targeted operations in recent weeks, dealing severe blows to organized crime syndicates and illegal trade networks.
In the Borgou region, customs intercepted 3,000 hunting cartridges destined for black-market distribution. In Couffo, authorities seized 1,400 kilograms of adulterated and counterfeit medications—protecting public health from potentially lethal fake drugs. Meanwhile, in Hillacondji, 5,574 untaxed Android phones were confiscated from an undeclared shipment. These coordinated actions underscore a fundamental shift in Benin’s customs strategy: from passive revenue collection to proactive, intelligence-driven border protection.
