Algeria’s women’s national football team carved out a new chapter in their history this Saturday, securing a place in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-finals for the very first time. Their thrilling 2-1 victory over Côte d’Ivoire also guarantees the ‘Greens’ a coveted spot in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The Algerian squad delivered a truly historic performance in Saturday’s AFCON quarter-final clash against Côte d’Ivoire. Despite falling behind to an opening goal from Inès Konan in the 30th minute, the ‘Greens’ found themselves with a numerical advantage when Ivorian talent Safi N’Sira Ouedraogo received a red card in the 42nd minute for a high kick to the face of Algerian goalkeeper Chloé N’Gazi.
Algeria drew level after the half-time interval, with Inès Khiri netting in the 58th minute, just moments after coming on as a substitute for Lina Boussaha in the 46th minute. The ‘Lady Elephants’, led by coach Reynald Pedros, had a golden opportunity to regain the lead from the penalty spot, but Rebecca Elloh’s shot was cruelly denied by the post in the 62nd minute. Capitalizing on this reprieve, the Algerian side ultimately sealed their victory with a second goal from Amira Ould Braham in the 64th minute, following an unfortunate error by Ivorian goalkeeper Aramatou Diakité.
Having reached the quarter-finals in the previous edition, Algeria now progresses to the final four for the first time in their history. Farid Benstiti’s players have simultaneously punched their ticket for the 2027 World Cup, set to be hosted in Brazil. Their next challenge in the semi-finals will be against the winner of the quarter-final match between Malawi and Ghana.
