The Union of African Free Press Journalists (UJPLA) expresses its profound concern and strong disapproval following the Malian authorities’ decision to prohibit the sale and distribution of Jeune Afrique magazine throughout the nation of Mali.

The UJPLA views this measure as a severe infringement upon press freedom, freedom of expression, and the fundamental right of Malian citizens to access diverse, unrestricted, fair, and independent information.

For several decades, Jeune Afrique magazine has been a recognized pan-African media outlet, significantly contributing to democratic dialogue and offering critical political, economic, and social analysis of the African continent. Its prohibition constitutes another perilous precedent, indicating an authoritarian trend that is incompatible with Mali’s international commitments concerning human rights.

The UJPLA underscores that press freedom is neither a privilege nor a concession from authorities, but rather an inherent and inalienable right, guaranteed by international conventions, notably the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Consequently, the UJPLA:

Unequivocally condemns this arbitrary decision;

Demands the immediate lifting of the ban on Jeune Afrique magazine in Mali;

Urges Malian authorities to prioritize open dialogue, transparency, and respect for fundamental liberties;

Invites human rights and press freedom organizations to mobilize against this oppressive tendency.

The UJPLA reaffirms its unwavering dedication to upholding press freedom and ensuring the safety of journalists across the entire African continent.
