Chad has achieved a major milestone in its energy transition with the inauguration of a cutting-edge solar power plant in Adré, a town serving as the capital of the Assoungha department in the Ouaddaï region. The official ceremony, held on August 7, 2026, was led by the department’s prefect and attended by key figures, including the chair of the Rural Electrification and Energy Mastery Agency’s board, its director general, local officials, technical and financial partners, as well as residents from Adré.
The project, aligned with the country’s strategy to expand energy access, aims to bolster electricity supply, enhance living conditions, and spur economic growth in the Assoungha region.
Local leaders hail transformative project
Adré’s mayor, Ahmat Abderrahim, praised the initiative as a game-changing venture that underscores the government’s commitment to energizing the town. Speaking at the ceremony, he highlighted how the project reflects broader efforts to modernize infrastructure and improve quality of life.
The director general of the Rural Electrification and Energy Mastery Agency, Younous Daoussa Mahamat, emphasized that the inauguration was far more than a symbolic event—it marked the fulfillment of a political promise. He credited the project’s realization to the visionary leadership of Chad’s President, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, who has prioritized universal energy access as a national priority. Mahamat stressed that no citizen should be left behind in the nation’s progress, and no community should remain in darkness due to lack of electricity.
According to official details, the hybrid solar plant boasts 4,800 photovoltaic panels, each with a capacity of 585 watts, generating a total installed capacity of 2.808 megawatts-peak. The facility also includes a battery storage system with a capacity of 7.52 megawatt-hours, two 500 KVA backup generators, 5 kilometers of medium-voltage power lines, and 10 kilometers of low-voltage distribution networks.
Community gratitude and future outlook
The prefect of the Assoungha department, Dillo Bergou, conveyed the population’s deep appreciation to President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno for his unwavering dedication to the region’s development. He also commended all stakeholders involved in bringing the project to fruition.
The ceremony concluded with a symbolic ribbon-cutting and a guided tour of the facilities, offering attendees a firsthand look at the innovative technology powering the plant.
