WASHINGTON, March 26, 2026 – The World Bank has greenlit a $150 million credit from the International Development Association (IDA) to guarantee uninterrupted access to vital health and educational provisions across Mali. This substantial funding package is designed to tackle the significant climatic, security, and economic hurdles the nation has faced in recent times.
The initiative, titled the Emergency Access to Essential Services Project in Mali, will bolster the ongoing operations of both national and regional healthcare facilities. This includes covering their running expenses, ensuring a steady supply of crucial vaccines and medicines, and providing complimentary medical care for women of childbearing age and children under five. Furthermore, it aims to enhance the capabilities of health professionals to address escalating health risks stemming from climate change. Within the education sphere, the project will offer support across all stages of schooling. Key provisions include supplying educational materials, distributing school grants to the most vulnerable students, and facilitating the administration of national examinations.
This strategic endeavor aligns with the World Bank Group’s employment agenda, playing a crucial role in safeguarding human capital development.
“By maintaining access to vital health and education services amidst significant budgetary pressures, this project safeguards the pipeline of Mali’s future workforce and their productive potential,” elaborated Clara de Sousa, the World Bank Group’s Divisional Director for Mali. “Healthy, educated children, alongside healthy mothers, are fundamental to cultivating a resilient and productive labor force.”
The project is set to positively impact 2.3 million individuals who will gain access to indispensable health services, with a specific focus on 1.4 million women and 391,395 children under the age of five. In the educational sector, 1.1 million students will benefit from schooling support and access to national examinations, conducted under established standards, thereby fostering educational continuity and human capital growth.
This initiative complements the efforts of various development partners, built upon extensive consultations and specialized coordination mechanisms to ensure its efficient and cohesive implementation.
