President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau has officially declared his candidacy for a second term, putting an end to months of speculation. The announcement, made in the capital Bissau, positions him at the heart of the country’s forthcoming electoral battle.
A long-awaited decision
After repeatedly hinting that he might step aside, Embaló has now made his intentions clear. He will seek re-election, responding to persistent appeals from his supporters and coalition leaders. A turbulent first term
Embaló’s presidency began in early 2020 after a disputed election at the end of 2019. - Security challenges: The regime has faced several episodes of military tension and alleged coup attempts in the capital.
