How can higher education institutions better align their research with the pressing needs of the nation? That was the central question as leaders of Togo’s UNESCO academic chairs convened in Lomé on July 9, 2026. Organized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the meeting provided a platform to assess ongoing initiatives and chart a new strategic path to amplify the impact of scientific research on the country’s development.

Academic leaders unite to redefine research priorities

Under the leadership of Prof. Gado Tchangbedji, the Minister Delegated for Higher Education and Scientific Research, key figures from the National Commission for UNESCO and representatives of UNESCO chairs across Togo’s public universities came together. The gathering served as a critical forum to evaluate progress, share insights, and identify opportunities for deeper collaboration.

The meeting brought together the Chair in Renewable Energies at the University of Lomé, the Chair on Women, Science, and Sustainable Water Management in West Africa at the same university, and the Chair in ICT and Higher Education Development in West Africa at the University of Kara.

Transforming research into actionable solutions

Participants reviewed the core missions of these chairs, the projects already underway, and the challenges encountered in the field. The overarching goal remains unchanged: to reinforce the role of these academic structures so they can more effectively address Togo’s most pressing challenges—be it energy transition, sustainable water resource management, gender equality, or digital transformation in education.

Building a unified platform for scientific collaboration

Discussions resulted in actionable recommendations to enhance the network’s efficiency. A key proposal emerged: the creation of a shared digital platform connecting the National Commission for UNESCO and the chairs. This initiative aims to streamline knowledge sharing, improve coordination, and enable joint project implementation.

Participants also emphasized the need to strengthen collaboration between universities, expand technical and financial partnerships, and secure support from new allies to advance research initiatives.

Research must serve national priorities, says top official

Closing the session, Prof. Tchangbedji urged chair leaders to align their programs with Togo’s development priorities. For the minister, scientific research must deliver tangible outcomes that support public policies and contribute to the country’s economic and social transformation.

He highlighted the importance of this meeting as a turning point for higher education in Togo, fostering stronger synergies between researchers, academic institutions, and national bodies.

Toward a stronger, more influential scientific ecosystem

This gathering reflects the government’s commitment to leveraging the expertise within public universities. By deepening ties between UNESCO chairs, fostering partnerships, and steering research toward national needs, Togo is positioning itself to consolidate its scientific ecosystem and boost the contribution of higher education to sustainable development.

The outcomes of this meeting signal the beginning of a more structured cooperation among academic stakeholders, with the shared ambition of making research a driving force for innovation and growth in Togo.
