The Union Parlementaire Africaine (UPA) recently hosted Ousmane Sonko, President of Senegal’s National Assembly, for a high-level meeting with Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, Chair of the UPA’s Executive Committee. The discussion, held on June 4 during the 85th session of the UPA Executive Committee, centered on strengthening the continental legislative institution amid pressing political, economic, and security challenges facing Africa.
Sonko underscored the urgent need for deep structural reforms within the UPA to enhance its operational efficiency and amplify its role in shaping Africa’s political and institutional landscape. He proposed key measures to modernize the organization, including improved policy alignment with the African Union to ensure greater coherence in continental governance.
The Senegalese leader emphasized that closer collaboration between the UPA’s recommendations and the African Union’s decisions could significantly boost the effectiveness of Africa’s development initiatives. His proposals reflect a broader continental push to revitalize parliamentary diplomacy and foster stronger institutional partnerships across Africa.
This meeting is part of ongoing efforts by African leaders to reinforce parliamentary cooperation and advance more impactful governance frameworks that directly serve the continent’s citizens.
