In the midst of rising tensions within PASTEF, Minister Moussa Bala Fofana has taken a firm stand to address public criticism from party leader Ousmane Sonko. He reaffirms his unwavering commitment to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye while emphasizing the critical importance of state continuity amid growing internal divisions.

Minister Moussa Bala Fofana clarifies his stance after Ousmane Sonko’s remarks

Minister Moussa Bala Fofana, serving as the Minister of Urban Planning, Local Authorities, and Territorial Development, has issued a public statement following remarks by Ousmane Sonko, the party president of PASTEF. The comments raised concerns about the loyalty of certain government officials who were retained in their positions after the transition.

In his response, the minister underscored the necessity of maintaining state continuity while addressing the allegations of political alignment. As a three-time appointee, he highlighted the renewed trust placed in him by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, describing it as both a personal honor and an institutional responsibility. He noted that he had no prior relationship with the President before assuming office but emphasized the collaborative framework established to implement public policies effectively.

Moussa Bala Fofana also reflected on his past collaboration with Ousmane Sonko, now Speaker of the National Assembly, describing him as a key architect of the party’s original political vision. Despite the current disagreements, he stressed that the personal and political bonds formed during this period remain unbroken.

Addressing allegations of disloyalty

In direct response to Ousmane Sonko’s statements from June 2, 2026, the minister firmly rejected any implication of partisan disloyalty or defiance. He stated unequivocally, “I acted with full freedom and in my personal capacity.” He clarified that his decision to remain in government was driven not by career ambitions or defiance, but by a personal interpretation of his public duties. He emphasized that no political pressure influenced his choice.

The minister framed his decision as a balance between party discipline and national responsibility, choosing to prioritize what he described as the continuity of commitments made to citizens during the 2024 campaign. In his words, “Between partisan logic and my duty to the Nation, I chose to continue the mission entrusted to me.” This stance, he argued, reflects a commitment to public service where the general interest must prevail over short-term political considerations.

Moussa Bala Fofana acknowledged the personal and political implications of his position, accepting the potential criticism and misunderstandings it may generate. He rejected the pursuit of popularity in favor of administrative continuity and the implementation of public policies, which he deemed essential in the current context. He concluded by framing the national challenges as transcending partisan affiliations, stating, “Senegal is greater than any one of us.” He reaffirmed his dedication to what he called “loyalty to conscience and public service.”
