Former Senegalese President Macky Sall, who has resided in Morocco since leaving office two and a half years ago, is set to meet with his successor, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, in Dakar on July 17. In a statement shared on social media, Sall confirmed that the meeting aligns with his ongoing consultations ahead of his bid for the United Nations Secretary-General position.

«As part of my consultations and visits related to my candidacy for the position of UN Secretary-General, I will travel to Senegal this Friday, July 17, 2026. I extend my deepest gratitude to His Excellency President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye for granting this meeting. I also express my profound appreciation to the people of Senegal for their unwavering support and encouragement since the announcement of my candidacy,» Sall stated.

The announcement of Sall’s visit and his meeting with President Faye has sparked reactions, particularly among the most vocal supporters of the Pastef party led by Ousmane Sonko. Some critics argue that welcoming Sall amounts to endorsing the pre-election violence and alleged mismanagement of the country’s economic and financial resources during his administration.

It is worth noting that Sall’s candidacy for the UN Secretary-General role has not been officially endorsed by Senegal but by Burundi. Macky Sall served as President of Senegal from 2012 until 2024. Since departing from office and settling in Marrakech, he has been actively engaging with global leaders to strengthen his prospects for the UN’s top administrative position.
