Three Senegalese supporters released after Morocco CAN incidents land in Dakar
Three Senegalese football fans who were detained in Morocco following incidents during the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) have returned home to Dakar. Abdoulaye Dieng, Ibrahima Diop, and Aziz Wade touched down at the Blaise Diagne International Airport at 6:25 PM aboard a Royal Air Maroc flight, greeted by a jubilant crowd of supporters.
The trio were among 18 Senegalese fans arrested after the heated final match between Senegal and Morocco. They faced charges of hooliganism, including public disorder, throwing objects, damaging sports equipment, and assaulting law enforcement officers. After serving a three-month prison sentence, they were released on April 18.
Ongoing legal consequences for remaining supporters
The remaining 15 detainees, whose appeals were rejected, are still facing prison terms ranging from six months to a year. Their eventual return to Senegal will depend on the completion of their respective sentences.
What led to the arrests?
Tensions flared during the CAN final, with clashes between fans and security forces. The incidents prompted swift legal action, resulting in the arrests and subsequent convictions of multiple supporters. While three have now been freed, the legal proceedings for the others continue.
