The skies over Ouagadougou witnessed a moment of profound joy and spiritual fulfillment on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, as the inaugural return flight carrying Burkinabè pilgrims from the Hajj 2026 touched down. A total of 342 faithful disembarked, their hearts full of gratitude and their hands clasped in prayer, greeted by the warm embraces of family and officials alike.

This historic flight signaled the official commencement of the homecoming phase for pilgrims who had spent weeks immersed in devotion and reflection at the sacred sites of Islam. The emotional homecoming was a testament to their perseverance and faith, with many visibly moved by the journey’s significance.

Dressed in vibrant traditional garments, the returning pilgrims radiated happiness, their faces beaming with satisfaction. Among them was Hadja Karidja Karambiri/Koné, whose eyes welled up with emotion as she stepped onto Burkinabè soil. She shared her heartfelt reflections on the experience:

« The pilgrimage to Makkah was an unforgettable blessing. As a first-time pilgrim, I feel deeply fulfilled. Every moment unfolded with divine grace… We prayed fervently for the restoration of peace and social harmony across Burkina Faso »

The government, represented by Saïdou Sankara, Secretary General of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Mobility, conveyed a message of reassurance to the nation. While refraining from offering a full assessment at this early stage, Sankara emphasized the smooth execution of the pilgrimage thus far, noting the absence of any major incidents. He extended the state’s heartfelt gratitude to the returning pilgrims on behalf of the Prime Minister, stressing the spiritual and communal significance of their journey.

« We bring a message of profound satisfaction and joy tonight, seeing our brothers and sisters return in good health after fulfilling their sacred duty. On behalf of the Prime Minister, we welcome them with open arms and extend our warmest congratulations. May this spiritual endeavor strengthen their faith and the prayers they offered in Makkah be answered—blessings for their families and the nation as a whole »

The Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina (FAIB), represented by El Hadj Oumarou Zoungrana, praised the flawless organization of the Hajj 2026. In a gesture of appreciation, Zoungrana conveyed the federation’s heartfelt congratulations to the steering committee for ensuring a successful pilgrimage.
