Paris celebrations: 780 arrests and 457 detentions after PSG’s Champions League triumph
Following the Paris Saint-Germain’s historic victory in the Champions League final on Saturday, authorities reported significant crowd management challenges across France. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez addressed the situation in a late-night press conference.
The Interior Minister confirmed that 780 individuals were taken into custody nationwide, with 457 placed in police detention following the celebrations. This represents a 32% increase compared to the previous year when 592 arrests were recorded after PSG’s first Champions League victory, including 491 in the Paris region. Notably, 57 law enforcement officers sustained injuries during the unrest.
During the early hours of Sunday, Nuñez emphasized that while festive gatherings were expected, the scale of disturbances proved unacceptable. He highlighted that authorities had anticipated some incidents but not the extent of the damage and altercations that unfolded.
additional incidents reported
Tragedy struck on the Paris ring road in the early hours when a motorcyclist lost control and crashed into concrete barriers near the Porte Maillot exit. The rider, born in 2002, did not survive the collision. Additionally, a severe knife-related assault left another individual fighting for their life in a Paris hospital.
In a separate incident, a driver lost control of their vehicle on Saturday evening, crashing into a terrace and injuring two pedestrians before fleeing the scene. Authorities confirmed that the most seriously injured victim was not in immediate danger.
Paris prosecutors also reported an accident involving a motorcross rider on the périphérique, resulting in a fatality.
comprehensive security measures implemented
Security forces had prepared extensively for the event, deploying 22,000 police and gendarmerie officers across France, with 8,000 stationed in Paris and its surrounding areas. The heightened presence was part of a meticulously planned security strategy to manage the influx of spectators celebrating PSG’s victory and to oversee concurrent sporting and cultural events, including rugby matches, Roland-Garros tennis, concerts by Aya Nakamura at Stade de France, and a performance by Damso at Paris La Défense Arena.
