msf urges global fund to prioritize nord-kivu amidst escalating health crisis in dr Congo

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has issued a stark warning regarding the potential for a severe deterioration of the health situation in Nord-Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), should future funding for the region be reduced. This vital area has endured years of humanitarian crisis and persistent supply challenges that have profoundly impacted its healthcare infrastructure.
Stéphane Doyon, a program manager with MSF France, articulated the organization’s deep concern. He emphasized that a withdrawal of Nord-Kivu from the Global Fund’s project would halt the flow of crucial medical treatments, particularly for malaria, which are not supplied by MSF but are instead sourced through the Global Fund. Doyon underscored that MSF lacks the capacity to assume the Global Fund’s role across an entire province, predicting an extremely critical health crisis if such a scenario unfolds.
Malaria remains the predominant reason for patient consultations at MSF’s health facilities in the region. For MSF, the paramount objective is the reinstatement of malaria support for Nord-Kivu, which stands as one of the most acutely affected and critically vulnerable health zones in the DRC. The province frequently battles outbreaks of measles and cholera, adding to the immense suffering of a population already deeply scarred by ongoing conflict. External aid is unequivocally essential for their survival and recovery.
