Morocco secures influential position in Mediterranean parliamentary assembly

The Kingdom joins the Bureau of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean and takes charge of the Artificial Intelligence Commission.

Moroccan Parliament building

A Moroccan parliamentary delegation actively participated in the 10th Summit of Parliament Presidents and the 19th plenary session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM), held over the weekend at the Egyptian Parliament’s headquarters in the new administrative capital.

Led by Abdelmajid Fassi Fihri, Vice President of the Moroccan House of Representatives, the delegation seized the opportunity to bolster the Kingdom’s influence within the PA-UfM framework.

Strategic appointment reflects growing diplomatic trust

During the Bureau and expanded Bureau meetings, the plenary session formalized the new PA-UfM Bureau composition for 2026-2030, including permanent commission presidencies. Morocco’s election as a Bureau member and its appointment as chair of the Artificial Intelligence Commission underscore the confidence placed in the Kingdom’s parliamentary diplomacy and its elevated standing within this Euro-Mediterranean institution.

Key themes and Morocco’s strategic vision

In his address, Fassi Fihri emphasized the PA-UfM’s role as a vital platform for dialogue and cooperation among Mediterranean parliaments. He highlighted the assembly’s focus on pressing issues such as artificial intelligence, youth engagement, and parliamentary diplomacy for peace and stability in the Middle East, reflecting a collective awareness of the profound transitions reshaping the region’s technological, cultural, and geopolitical landscapes.

He also noted that Morocco, under the guidance of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, continues to advance its modernization agenda, digital transformation, and technological infrastructure development. This strategy positions knowledge-based economy as a key driver for sustainable growth, enhanced competitiveness, and Morocco’s reputation as a reliable partner across the Mediterranean, Africa, and the global stage.

Delegation engagement and regional priorities

The Moroccan delegation, including Chaoui Belassal, Meriem Rmili, Houria Didi, Rabab Aïlal, Salwa Demnati, and Ibrahim Aâba, actively contributed to discussions on parliamentary diplomacy, artificial intelligence governance, youth involvement in decision-making, and efforts to strengthen security, stability, and shared development across the Mediterranean.

The session concluded with a call to maintain parliamentary coordination among member states and to reinforce the PA-UfM’s role as a dialogue and trust-building platform dedicated to regional security, stability, sustainable development, and collective prosperity.
