Mali showcases higher education innovation at global summit in China
The global summit on the future of higher education, held June 6 at the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, brought together policymakers, educators, tech innovators and international organizations to redefine the relationship between academia and industry.
Mali’s delegation was led by Dr. Mamadou Koumaré, Rector of Bamako’s University of Social Sciences and Management, who also heads the UNESCO International Centre for Higher Education Innovation (UNESCO-ICHEI) partnership coordinating Mali’s higher education institutions.
The event focused on creating a new ecosystem for talent development by bridging higher learning with cutting-edge technology sectors. Discussions centered on innovative training programs leveraging artificial intelligence across fields such as agriculture, commerce, education and natural sciences.
Key outcomes included concrete steps to strengthen capacity through AI-driven curricula, highlight successful tech-driven educational initiatives and expand the International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) network. A global report and partnership framework were announced to support these goals.
The summit also fostered stronger ties between tech companies and universities, promoting collaborative AI-powered talent development models. Participants emphasized the need for curriculum innovation, practical skill-building and lifelong learning opportunities.
Mali’s involvement was particularly significant as three of its leading institutions—the University of Kurukanfuga, the University of Social Sciences and Management and the University Institute of Pedagogy—have partnered with UNESCO-ICHEI to advance digital and AI integration in higher education. Dr. Koumaré leads this initiative, which unites these universities under the IIOE framework.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization reaffirmed its dedication to supporting Mali’s higher education sector through capacity-building in human resources, technical expertise and technological infrastructure.
